Re: Failings of New Atheism
I think one of the reasons New Atheism is succumbing to lazy intellectualism is that human beings aren’t rational creatures. We are capable of rationality, but it usually takes a tremendous amount of effort, and a person at their best is still incredibly biased. Claiming that you’re fully rational and only act based on empirical evidence is sorta kinda like saying you don’t see race. Not only does it conveniently hide your own bias, it denies the effects your actions have on others, and maintains an inner sense of superiority.
Honestly I think that the whole movement needs to be reorganized around the Ideologies that fall under Atheism because as it stands the entire thing is a big pot of everything, including complete bullshit. its like you have a machine with all the parts and more but you have to put it together and then clean up, and fine tune it.
I think our machine is missing a lot of parts, precisely because it’s a machine at present instead of something organic. Atheism needs a cultural foundation.
