cartoonpolitics:

References Canada’s right wing minister Vic Toews defending his government’s backing of a controversial and vastly over-reaching Internet surveillance bill that will allow the government to spy on peoples Internet activities without a warrant whenever it feels like it. He said, in all seriousness, that the public “can either stand with us or with the child pornographers.”  The craziness and the police-state mentality must be spreading north from the USA. Poor Canada.

[TW: Talk of child pornographers]
"Won’t someone think of the children!" Pearl clutching of this magnitude is an insult to every survivor of childhood sexual abuse. Especially since it’s false pearl clutching used to push a hidden agenda.
As someone who was raised by a child pornographer, let me tell you a few more broken things about the argument in favor of internet surveillance. There isn’t a child porn “industry”. Most of the websites that display child porn are actually infection vectors for botnets. That is their real purpose. Most of these sites have the same set of recycled content. Most of that content was generated decades ago. Child porn isn’t lucrative. It is fueled only by the sickness of its perpetrators, and it is used for ulterior motives on the web.
The people who make child porn are abusive and sick. Taking down a few websites won’t change them. Taking down websites won’t change their abusive behavior. It won’t stop them from making child porn or distributing it. It will not end the cycle of abuse that perpetuates this behavior. And it will. Not. Protect. Children. Especially not when other laws used to “protect children” are in reality used to prosecute trafficked children for prostitution (criminalization of prostitution is a separate yet related issue), and are used to register children as sex offenders for the “crime” of being precocious.
So even if these internet censorship laws DID work as advertised, they still wouldn’t work as advertised. None of them attack the root of the problem. Meanwhile, they will be abused (notice the continuing abuse theme) to censor the rest of the internet, restrict free speech, and spy on people without warrant or accountability. By using the spectre of child pornography to advance a police state agenda, these politicians render themselves no better than the child pornographers. Which is the worse scum? I honestly can’t decide.
